Photography is a very popular hobby, but taking great pictures involves more than just pointing and clicking. There are a number of tips professional photographers use. Follow them, and your reputation as a photography wiz will grow as your pictures get better and better. Follow these tips to make your photos stand out above the rest.

Do not use the flash on a camera unless you are in a darker location. Using a flash outdoors in a location that already has a lot of light will just make your picture come out too bright. Some cameras have an automatic flash setting so that your camera knows when the flash is needed.

When photographing portraits, isolate your subject. Use a medium telephoto lens or the medium telephoto setting on your zoom. That, combined with a large aperture (try f/4 or larger), blurs the foreground and background. Focus on the eyes. Use diffused lighting for a flattering look. If outdoors, wait for an overcast sky or shoot with the subject in the shadows and the sun at your back.

The key to taking good photographs is to always remember that lighting is the most important thing. Think about lighting all the time. It does not matter what the source of the lighting is, but it is the elemental part of any photograph. Use the sun, a streetlight, a spotlight or even the computer screen to capture any light and make a great photograph.

Get closer when you are taking photos. Especially when you are taking a series of shots, from which you will chose the best, get in there. The better your scene fills the frame, the better the overall picture will be. Take several shots, so you can get the nicest shot possible.

When setting up for a shot, keep in mind that less, often times, is more in photography. You dont need to overdo your photo elements. Adopting a simple, minimalistic style can help you to identify the heart of a shot.

Throughout life, we are coached on making things centered and even. A well-known artistic technique is to make a picture slightly asymmetric. This lack of perfect symmetry actually attracts the eyes interest. If your camera has an auto-focus feature, it may try to lock onto whatever appears in the middle of the frame. Instead, focus the camera manually, then secure the focus prior to taking the photo.

To take more unique pictures, try using limitation. You could restrict yourself to taking pictures intended to represent one concept (like "sweetness") all day, for instance. Try taking 100 photographs, all from the same location, and attempt to make each unique. By restricting yourself this way, you can force more creativity from a limited source.

Create the perfect photo! There is no such thing as taking a great shot, unless you just happen to be at the right place at the right time. For all the rest of the times, great images have to be created by you, the photographer. Take the time to set-up the images that you want to shoot.

One great tip for photography is to use the flash when the sun is out. Sometimes the sun creates nasty shadows and makes the subject of the photograph not look as good as they could. By using flash, some of the shadows will be filled in and the subject will look better.

As you can tell from these tips, you can get a great photo that will capture a great memory. Although mastery requires a lot of time, research and practice, it is well within the realm of possibility.
